We decided to completely renovate our Frers 48 sailing yacht, designed by German Frers and built at the Yu Chin Marine shipyard in Taiwan in 1984.
As part of this project, we began renovating the 48-foot SY Hoschaf’s standing rigging and fittings, mast, boom, teak deck, interior cabin layout, ceilings, galley, toilets, as well as the floorboards and all sanitary and electrical installations, devices, and systems.
However, in this article, we will only summarise the main reasons why you should renew the teak deck on your boat.
Basic Steps for Renovating and Replacing Teak Decks
I. Assessing the Condition of the Teak Deck
Before deciding whether to restore or replace your teak deck, it is very important to evaluate its condition carefully. The key factors to consider are:
Teak thickness
Presence of cracks or breaks
Whether water leaks into the cabin
These criteria help determine if the existing teak can be saved or if a full replacement is necessary.
II. SY Hoschaf Teak Deck Inspection and Decision
Last year, we evaluated the teak deck of SY Hoschaf. Upon inspection, it became clear that standard maintenance would not be sufficient due to advanced wear and damage. Therefore, we decided on a complete deck renewal. As shown in the video above, the removal process is challenging and labour-intensive.
III. Installing a New Teak Deck
If the teak is beyond repair, as in the case of SY Hoschaf, a full replacement is required:
Careful removal of the old decking without damaging the underlying structure
Inspection, repair, or reinforcement of the deck substrate
Precise fitting of teak planks with professional caulking and fastening
Sanding, oiling, and sealing for durability and an aesthetic finish
Establishing regular maintenance routines to preserve the new deck
IV. Transformation of SY Hoschaf
The complete renewal of SY Hoschaf’s teak deck not only improved the boat’s appearance and operational function but also resulted in an excellent outcome.
V. Upcoming Updates
In the coming period, we will share photos and videos of the renovated cabins and the boat’s current inventory with our valued readers.
