SY Caria is one of the wooden sailboats that the Aegean and Mediterranean have happily hosted for thousands of years. Also known as gayik; she is a durable and elegant wooden tirhandil with a similar stern and bow, driven by sails.
The history of the tirhandil dates back to ancient times. While some masters say it is 3000 years old, historians say it is not that old because they seek scientific evidence. Although her form has probably changed tirhandils are very old boats. It is true that in Bodrum, tirhandil is called gayik. After all, how many people travel on gayiks in the Aegean and Mediterranean anymore?
The word tirhandil, pronounced in the Bodrum dialect; is thought to have emerged with the change in the word ''trikandini'', derived from the Greek ''tria-kena'' meaning three to one. The most important feature of tirhandils is that the ratio of width to length is approximately one-third. In addition, as can be understood from the expression “Two - bow and transom shapes - are one” used for tirhandil; they have a wide belly and a round body with a symmetrical bow and stern, crescent-shaped stem. Thanks to their low keel, bulwark and curved body structure, it would not be wrong to say that they are designed in a very marine way while looking aesthetic and attractive.
Look how Mr Mehmet Nami Uyav, the master of years, describes them. “Tirhandil is a different boat. Even if it is small, She gives you such an honour that you think you are Barbaros (Well-known Turkish pirate) when you are at the helm. It is also safe. Sailing with it is something else, you can never get enough of its seamanship. You can never get enough of it, my friend.”
SY Caria is a single-cabin Bodrum-made tirhandil. There is a double bed in the head cabin, and there is a kitchen and toilet in the saloon section of the boat. There is a large sunbathing area on the boat. Thanks to the Ford engine that produces 85 HP, both manoeuvres and transfers can be performed safely.
The boat has a mainsail and furling genoa and the cockpit area is quite large. It is a perfect evening and pleasure boat. SY Caria is located in Ayvalık Setur Marina. There is no mooring problem until December 2024 and she can be transferred including her place. Boat demonstrations will be held during working hours. The price has been kept low because she is the second boat of the current owner.
