Youth and Sports Day

The date 19 May 1919 is one of the turning points in the history of the Turkish Republic. May 19, the date when Atatürk set foot in Samsun, is also celebrated as the "Youth and Sports Day". Atatürk had seen that during the National Struggle, those who would take the Turkish nation forward and those who would oppose the outdated ideas were young ideas.

For this reason, the concept of "youth" carries a special importance for Atatürk. While Atatürk frequently talked about young people, he expressed youth as an idea, that is, innovation in opinion, outside the age limit. His saying is very meaningful: "Young-minded means real-minded who sees and understands the truth."
